What’s in a name…

Jonas
About four years ago, I got Ciri to watch Stargate. She liked it a lot and we talked about it a lot. We talked about it at work, with friends, even with Ciri’s commander. Ciri’s commander is a huge geek and she offered to let us borrow her DVD sets of the TV show. That’s how things work when you’re serving overseas; everybody borrows each others DVD box sets…
We started with season 1 and worked our way through to about 7 or 8 . It’s been a while since we originally watched them. The series sucked us in and we watched all of the available box sets in a couple months.
My favorite character was one of the rather short lived ones, Jonas Quinn. I know some fans didn’t care for him, but I thought he was cool; I could relate with the character. Maybe it was because he shares the same hair line that I have… maybe because of his sense of justice… maybe because of his quick learning abilities… or maybe because of his idealistic views of his homeworld. Whatever the reason, Ciri and I agreed that he and his name were both wicked cool.
Jonas is a good strong name. And, really, it’s as close as I’ll ever get to naming one of my kids after some geek related figure. (I wanted to name him Cloud.) We decided then that our sons name, if God felt that we should be blessed with one, would be Jonas.
But then three little shmucks had to mess it all up. Every time I mention our son’s name, I get the same reply: “Oh! You named him after the Jonas brothers?” What the crap?!! NO! We named him after the great hero from the planet of Langara! A man so stricken by guilt over his participation in building a deadly weapon that he decided to steal said weapon in order to save his people. A man that tried hard to repent and atone for his sins everyday and with every mission. Did we name him after three goofy looking, crap-singing, tools? Oh yea. Sure.
Ugh. So… Jonas Isaac is his complete name and he’s about ready to join our little clan. Are you watching the Guamaso Feed? There’s already some activity with Jonas, so don’t miss out on any more events!
Hey, isn’t that Parker Lewis
? Oh man, we are collecting the Top Ten list of “Things showing that I’m getting old”… I guess, knowing Parker Lewis is one of them…
I like your name choices very much. I wouldn’t think of the Stargate guy but more the christian version even though I’m atheist but I like the bibel books because often there’s a good moral behind the stories…
And I really like Isaac! I think it’s important that the name is not popular so that you have three or four people with the same name in you class! And cute nicks are important
Yup! Parker Lewis… I remember watching a couple of episodes of that… I was more into cartoons and anime around that time. When we first watched his episodes on SG-1, I knew I recognized him but I couldn’t remember where until I Wiki’d him.
I think the Christian name you’re thinking about is Jonah. But Jonas is close enough.
We’re Catholic and I wanted to name our kids after great people in history (real or imagined)… Izabella was sort of named after Ciri’s Sergeant and she is a very good person to name a daughter after.
We’re still trying to think of a nick name for Jonas… Izabella was easy: Izzy. What do we call Jonas? Jon? No. Jonny? Oy. No. We’re kinda stuck… Ciri just calls him Bug. I call him Lil’ Dude… you know, like “The Dude.” (Have you seen the Big Lebowski? Jeff Bridges is teh cool) Anyway, we’re open to suggestions…
Hey, I think that Iza/Isa, when pronounced European-like (eg. German-like, Dutch-like or so), would be way nicer to address your lil’ girl, Juan. I’m Izabela (without double ‘l’) myself, live in EU and everybody calls me this way, which I find pretty okay and nice (+ short and very ‘matter-of-fact’, if can say so). On the other hand, that all Izzy and other, say, ‘cute’ forms are totally not appealing to me and at times I even find them discouraging. Izzy sounds exact same as ‘easy’, just like you wrote above – so it basically means that other kids e.g. at school, can label your girl and call her ‘easy’, which I don’t think clever particularly if you’re female. Would sound ‘lame’ for a teen girl, so please think of it this way. My suggestion would be starting to accustom her to that Iza or Isa better, but ‘heaven forbid’
pronounced in a ‘typisch’ English/American way, like ‘Ay-za’, which sounds literally awful.
As regards the other name you mentioned here, the very nice idea would be addressing your boy with a full name Jonas and not a nick, but in a German/Scandinavian way. Eventually Jon – but also Scandinavian-like. (So you could simply replace the first English consonant ‘j’ with English ‘y’, so that the sound would be ‘Yonas’/’Yon’ when pronounced). It sounds much better this, say, ‘harder’ way, than English-like + your lil’ kid’s name won’t be associated that often with Jonas Bros any more.
Best! And groetjes uit Nederland
I’ve been to the Netherlands!!
Sorry. I get excited easily.
Thanks for the tip. I actually never thought that “easy” could be used in place of Izzy. It makes sense, but we’ll play it by ear. By the time she reaches the age when other kids calling her “Easy-Izzy” she’ll be smart enough to change her nickname or retialiate (in a peaceful, non-aggressive way, of course!).
I have to say, though, I really like Isa. We would pronounce it, “Ee-ssah” with our Mexican accent. Ciriana has used that one a few times, I believe.
Again, with our mexican accent, we actually call Jonas, “Yoh-nahs.” “Yon” is ok, but it’s missing the beauty that “Izzy” has. People can make fun of names all they want, it doesn’t mean the name is any less beautiful. Ciriana is a beautiful name, and yet my wife was made fun of all her childhood years. No. I’m looking for something that “pops.” “Yon” is good, and we may end up with that, but i’m still looking for that “perfect” nick name.
Well, thanks for the comment!
