Before Hanna pays a visit:

I’ve been monitoring the Doppler, watching Hanna travel along the coast and, finally, towards us.   It seems a lot bigger then it did before, but I am sure that is my imagination.   I’m a little excited and a little nervous.   This is the first hurricane that we’ve ever experienced.   I imagine this is what people feel like when they experience their first earthquake.

Anyway, in case the power goes out, we will lose the house phone.   (side note: I know I said I was going to cancel it, but rather then pay cancellation fees, I thought I would wait until the 1st of Oct.   Rest assured, it will be canceled then.)   Our cell phones might not get reception through the thick cloud cover, but sometimes when you can’t get a voice signal, you can get a data signal.   If I have a data signal than i will send updates, if any, to my Twitter page.

Right now we are under flash flood warning, high wind warning, and tornado warning.   It doesn’t seem like the hurricane will come near us, even though it looks like it might from the satalite images, so we should just a get a few inches of rain and lots of wind.   Hopefully no tornadoes, as they can be hard to see at night!   The wind will more than likely kill our power, but, like I said before, I am more worried about the trees in our backyard.   Most likely they will survive, if not, then hopefully they will fall away from the house.

We’re all set up downstairs, our supplies are ready, and it will soon be time for bed.   I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep.   If there is enough light outside, I plan on taking pictures of the storm.   The ones I take will go up on my Flickr page, too, so check that one out if you can.

I just checked out the Doppler again.   It crazy watching it roll in like a gigantic cloud.   The beginning will be here in about 15 minutes.

In other news, Chris told me today he wants to play World of Warcraft.   I’ve actually missed playing it, so resigned up and I am about to play it right now on the laptop.   That is, until I get tired or the power goes out.   It’s been a few months since I’ve played, this should be fun.

Hurricane update

Hurricane Hanna

Hurricane Hanna

Hanna – she comes. We’ve been watching this hurricane for the past week, and it seems like it will make landfall this week.   It should be in North Carolina by Friday, and in the Raleigh vicinity midday Friday.   We’re hoping that it stays near the cost and that it decreases to a Tropical Storm.   It’s getting some momentum now near Cuba, but it is predicted to lose much of its strength by the time it gets to us.

Regardless of its strength and path, we’re getting ready.   I’m going out tomorrow to get some water and canned food, just in case.   I have my Zune that can pick up radio stations.   I’m putting the cat kennels together.   I’m checking our insurance documents to make sure that we’re good.   The only part that worries me is one of the trees in the back yard.   It leans a little over towards the house, but people are assuring me that trees generally hold during the summer months.   It makes sense, since they are stronger now as opposed to the winter months.

I was actually planning on heading to work tomorrow evening and Friday evening, but not anymore.   Ciri will hopefully be dismissed early, if she has to go in at all.

I just remembered that there is a nuclear reactor about an hours drive from here.   Hmm.   Well, if that thing goes off, which I know the odds are slim, death will come fast.   Right, morbid, huh?   No worries, though.   I’m sure we’ll all be fine.

I’m going to take lots of pictures and video.   If we get anything “exciting,” I’ll blog about it as it comes through.   Check out my Twitter page, as I update that bugger fairly often too.

UPDATE – I just checked out Hanna’s projected path.   It seems to have gotten a little delayed.   Looks like it will be here around 2 am Saturday.

Busy, busy. Or, I can’t sleep…

Aug 28 2008 Published by JuanO under Blog

It’s midnight.   There is a storm rolling over us right now, courtesy of Tropical Storm Fay.   I love storms, but this storm is not why I can’t sleep.   No, I’ve been going to bed late recently – which is very naughty of me since one day I will have to return to work at 8 in the morning.

It’s starting to pour.   Our street is glowing a dull amber color from the street lights and the rain.   Every few seconds the sky lights up and I fear the power will go out with each strike.   It’s happened before, not while I’ve been posting, mostly while we are already asleep.

Ok, the beef of this post was to talk about how busy I’ve made myself.   I’m at home with Izzy until we figure out a different solution to her care.   While I am at home, I’m busy cleaning and cooking, yes, I’ve become the home maker.   I like a clean home, and I actually enjoy cooking, so I have no problem being a home maker.

If I am not playing with Izzy, and not home making.   I am on the internet writing post after post.   I’ve signed up for Dadosphere, an online community of blogging fathers.   I wrote my first post, even after some issues with their posting backend.   I don’t think it was “user error,” but I admit it could be.   Anyway, I plan to post there as well as For Better, For Worse, and here – about parenthood.   I think my posts on Dadosphere will correspond closer to my posts here.   For Better, For Worse is still in its infancy and I’m not sure which direction it will go, but it should be fun writing about relationships and parenting there.

I also started a different blog called, Mr. Nice Guy.   I write about specific situations that we all face in our day to day lives where we sometimes become less than hospitable to our fellow human.   I write on how to be nicer in situations where we normally become angry and frustrated.   I’m having fun with it, so I know I won’t get bored with it.

I’ve also been working on starting a home business: Five Media Digital Services.   I really enjoy designing websites, and actually many other things too.   I am starting to lean more to Industrial Design, but web design is still a lot of fun.   I finished Saint Augustine’s Website a month ago and from what I hear, people really like it.   I learned a lot and I hope to use what I learned to bring in some supplemental income.   The problem is two fold; I don’t have any formal training in design and there are TONS of web designers out there.   I’ve always sold myself short to the point of completely discouraging myself from completing this type of task.   I may not be great, but I think I am pretty good.   This time, I am going for it.   If I fail, at least I went through with something for once.
