WordCampRDU

See what happens when I get excited?   I just checked my feeds for the day and found out that the Wayne Sutton, the guy coordinating WordCampRDU, had to cancel the whole thing, just days before the actual event.   I’m sure the poor dude tried everything he could, but I guess it wasn’t enough.

There is a Charlotte WordCamp in the works for November, and I really want to attend some conference this year.   Although, Charlotte is a good two/three hour drive from here.   It might not be worth it to drive out that far when we are trying to save money for a trip back to California next June.

We’ll see how everything goes.   I am totally bummed out, though.

Word Camp RDU

Word Camp RDU

The blog I started 5 years ago, Dull Inspiration, ran on software called Movable Type.   It was a complicated system, especially for someone that had very little experience with HTML.   I kind of gave up on the blog and let it go.   I signed up for a Blogger account and started using that, but, like my previous attempt, it failed as well.

Fast forward about a few years and here I am trying to become a mainstream blogger with WordPress as my platform of choice.   Since my switch to WordPress, I’ve learned a lot about HTML, PHP, and CSS as I played around with the software.   I created many templates for my other sites, each more intricate and professional than the last.   Now, I believe that I have a very good working knowledge of the software and want to take it to the next level.

Five Media DS is my business that I am trying to start that deals with web design.   When I started working on it, I thought that I should attend classes for design.   I also wanted to attend conventions and seminars for graphic design.

WordCamp is a convention, where developers, designers, and end users can group together to learn, share, and just have fun.   I heard of a WordCamp in Texas and the big one in San Francisco, so I didn’t think I would get to go until business picked up.   Well, my wish has come true. There is a WordCamp in Raleigh this weekend, Oct. 4th!   I’ve signed up to go, it will be from 8 am to 5 pm (or was it 6 pm…).   I’m going to take lots of pictures, talk to lots of WordPress folk, and hopefully continue to learn more about WordPress and it’s many features.

I’m really excited and nervous; I’ve never been to one of these shindigs before.   I’m pretty sure I can take a laptop and blog about what is going on, but the battery only lasts about 4 hours.   I hope I can charge it while I am there because I really want to blog and send tweets to my Twitter account.   I’m also going to be sending the photos to my Flickr stream either with my cell phone or with the laptop, depending on the laptop thing.

Hopefully, nothing comes up this Saturday that will keep me from going, otherwise keep an eye on my social feeds this Saturday to see what WordCamp RDU is all about.

Ikea is coming to North Carolina

Ikea
Ikea

During our time in Germany, we made many trips to the local Ikea store.   Ciri’s little Mitsubishi Eclipse would get stuffed to the back seat with lights, shelves, furniture, and much more.   That car could fit an uncanny amount of items!

We furnished our home with tons of Ikea products, and we built many of the Ikea products with Ikea tools!   We used Ikea light bulbs, Ikea batteries, Ikea plants, Ikea picture frames, Ikea everything!   Ikea is not only a great place to furnish a home on the cheap it’s also a great place to have lunch (Ligonberry juice!!!)!

When we moved to NC, we knew we were going to need some furnishings and immediately looked up the nearest Ikea store.   We were saddened to find out that the nearest store was about 4 hours away.   Many of the items we needed were on their website, but were marked as an item that could not be purchased online (Ikea, what is the point in listing it, if you aren’t going to sell it to me?!).   The drive would be long and expensive, and in the end, not worth it.   So we settled for other sub-par stores.

Out of frustration of the situation, I checked Ikea months ago for an explanation on how the furniture capital of the US did not have an Ikea location.   Actually, I found out that Ikea had plans to build   in Charlotte, NC.   Charlotte is about 2 hours from us, making it a much easier drive for us.   The only problem is that it won’t be ready until Spring of next year.

I remembered today that they were supposed to start construction in the Spring.   I Googled Ikea and Charlotte and found out that they started building the day before Izzy was born!   That must be a sign.   Anyway, we are on track to get an Ikea by next Spring and in all honesty, all I want are some Swedish meat balls covered in Lingonberry sauce and a glass of Lingonberry juice.
